A grit or sand-texture coating creates a deliberately rough surface by using particles or a formulated texture layer. It may be selected for visual character, tactile differentiation or friction, but roughness does not automatically prove anti-slip performance or abrasion resistance. Buyers should define the surface profile, coverage, substrate, handling condition and acceptance method.

Specify fine, medium or coarse appearance with a physical reference; identify particle or formulation, binder, spot or flood coverage and prohibited zones. If friction is functional, name the contacting materials, orientation, load and condition to be tested. Approve a representative sample for texture, particle retention, rub, folds, glue and converted-package handling.

Define visual texture and functional friction separately

Do not convert words such as coarse, grippy or durable into an unsupported numerical promise. Use a retained sample for sensory appearance and a scoped test where friction performance matters.

Choose the particle, binder and coverage

Keep coarse texture away from small copy, barcodes, folds, glue, closures and surfaces that must slide smoothly. Selective coverage can preserve function while reducing structural and handling conflicts.

Use test methods within scope

The ISO 8295 coefficient-of-friction test scope describes a method for coefficients of friction of plastic film and sheeting. It does not create a universal pass value for textured paperboard, boxes or mixed-material contacts.

If a functional friction test is required, define both contacting surfaces, direction, conditioning, load, speed and acceptance. For decorative paper packaging, physical master comparison and rub or particle-retention checks may be more relevant.

  • substrate, print, primer and surface condition;
  • particle or texture reference, colour and coverage;
  • spot artwork and clearances from structural zones;
  • intended decorative or friction function;
  • contacting surface and handling conditions where functional;
  • quantity, sample route, packing and acceptance criteria.

Cost categories may include formulation or particle trials, plates or screens, setup, drying or curing, reduced speed, protective packing, prototypes and inspection.

Approve a representative sample

A photo cannot show roughness, particle release, friction or wear. Approve the intended printed substrate and process.

Handle and rub representative areas, stack or slide against the specified contacting surface where relevant, fold and assemble the package, inspect contamination and retain a labelled master.

Define production start and QC

Start after artwork, material stack, texture target, test or sample, quantities, packing and acceptance criteria are approved.

Inspection can cover colour, coverage, particle distribution, roughness against the master, bare areas, agglomerates, shedding, rub change, cracking, blocking, registration, glue zones and package assembly.
